When: | 22 Jul 07 | Where: | Mt Charleston | What: | Bristlecone Loop | Distance: | 6 mi | Elevation Gain: | 600+ ft | The Plan: | General Info:
This trail is a six mile open loop with an elevation gain of 600+ feet. Currently we are expecting temperatures in the low 80s and partly cloud skys.
We will meet at the lower trailhead by 0945 in order to depart by 1000.
Trailhead:
This hike is located in Lee Canyon up in the Spring Mountains, about 1 hour northwest of Las Vegas.
From town, drive out to Mt Charleston turning on Lee Canyon Road and heading towards the sky area. We will meet at the lower trailhead which is located about 1 mile before the end of the road. Drive up the canyon, past the long meadow (Lee Meadow) and watch for signs to McWilliams Campground. After the "Campground Ahead" sign, but about 100 feet before the actual campground entrance, turn right onto an unmarked but well-graded dirt road. Drive about 100 yards to the big dirt parking lot at the end of the road. This is the lower trailhead from here we will walk up the road to the ski area and set off from the upper trailhead.
If for any reason you have trouble finding this unmarked trailhead you can park at the upper trailhead and wait for the rest of us to make the one mile trek up the hill.
New to the trail this year is some fencing at the begining of the trail to protect some of the local flora.
If you have any questions contact me.
Hope to see you out there.

The Normal Note: Remember to bring water, snacks, etc. Dress accordingly and wear comfortable hiking/running shoes/boots.
The Monsoon Note: Late July and August is the monsoon season here in the desert, especially up in Mt. Charleston. As such it is important to keep a vigilant eye on the weather so that you do not get caught out in one of the frequent afternoon storms.
